What Means Fiberglass Geogrid Tensile Strength 120KN/M ?

a ) 120-120: This is the most important part of the specification.

It denotes the minimum ultimate tensile strength per unit width in the machine direction (MD)

and cross-machine direction (CMD), measured in kN/m (kiloNewtons per meter).

b).The first 120 means it has a minimum ultimate tensile strength of 120 kN/m in its longitudinal direction (along the roll length).

c) The second 120 means it has a minimum ultimate tensile strength of 120 kN/m in its transverse direction (across the roll width).

In short, Fiberglass Geogrid 120-120 is a biaxial (equally strong in both directions) geogrid made from fiberglass,

with a strength rating of 120 kN/m.

The Correct Reinforcement Fiberglass Geogrid Installation Process for a Driveway:

This is the most critical part. If installed incorrectly, it will not work.

Step 1: Surface Preparation

The existing driveway must be clean, dry, and stable. All loose debris, vegetation, and dirt must be removed.

Large cracks or joints should be cleaned and filled with an appropriate crack sealant.

A tack coat (a thin layer of liquid asphalt emulsion) must be applied to the entire existing surface. This is essential for bonding.

Step 2: Geogrid Installation

The fiberglass geogrid rolls are laid directly onto the tack coat.

It should be laid flat with no wrinkles or folds.

Adjacent rolls must overlap by a specified amount (typically 6 to 12 inches, or as per manufacturer's instructions).

The geogrid must be in intimate contact with the old pavement; any air pockets will create a failure point.

Step 3: Asphalt Paving

The new layer of hot mix asphalt (HMA) is placed immediately over the geogrid.

The minimum compacted thickness of the new asphalt overlay is crucial. A typical requirement is a minimum of 3 to 4 inches.

The hot asphalt must be able to fully penetrate the grid's apertures to create the mechanical lock.

Step 4: Compaction

The asphalt is compacted as usual with a roller. The compaction forces further push the asphalt through the grid, ensuring a strong bond.

Reinforcement Fiberglass Geogrid Applications:

This specific strength 120-120 is very common and versatile. Its main uses include:

  • Road and Pavement Reinforcement:

Laid on soft subgrade before placing the aggregate base course.

It reduces rutting, extends pavement life, and allows for a thinner base layer, saving cost.

  • Soil Stabilization:

Used to build stable working platforms on very soft soils (like clay or peat),

allowing construction equipment to operate.

  • Asphalt Overlay Reinforcement:

A specialized application where a fiberglass geogrid is embedded in asphalt to retard reflective cracking from old pavement layers.

  • Landfill and Embankment Support:

Provides tensile strength to soil structures.

  • Parking Lots and Access Roads:

A very common application for this strength class.

Reinforcement Fiberglass Geogrid Key Considerations and Potential Downsides :

Not a Fix for Structural Failure:

If your old driveway is failing due to a poor base

(e.g., sinking, severe rutting), a geogrid will not help. The underlying base must be sound and stable.

Proper Thickness is Critical:

Paving too thin of an asphalt layer (e.g., 1.5-2 inches) over the grid will not

provide enough material to interlock properly and can lead to raveling (the asphalt breaking apart around the grid).

Cost:

It adds to the initial cost of the driveway project due to the material cost and specialized installation knowledge.

Contractor Experience:

Not all asphalt contractors are familiar with the proper installation technique for paving geogrids. It is vital to hire a contractor who has proven experience with this specific product.
